The Edwardsville boys golf team continued its strong start to the season by winning the 2nd Annual Tournament of Champions on Sept. 5 at Wilmette Golf Course in Wilmette.<\/p>\n
The Tigers fired an 8-over 288, while junior Bennett Briggs earned medalist honors with a 2-under 68.<\/p>\n
York was second at 13-over 293 and host Loyola Academy was third at 27-over 307 to round out the top three in the eight-team field.<\/p>\n
The victory was Edwardsville\u2019s fourth tournament championship of the season. The Tigers also won the Madison County Tournament on Aug. 20, the Quincy High School Invite on Aug. 22 and the Dick Gerber Invitational on Aug. 28-29.<\/p>\n
The Tigers defeated two teams that finished in the top eight at last season\u2019s Class 3A state tournament. Evanston was the state runner-up after losing the championship to New Trier on a tiebreaker, while York finished third. Evanston competed with a split squad in Wilmette.<\/p>\n
Briggs tied York\u2019s Will Huber for medalist honors, earning his first individual title of the season.<\/p>\n
Briggs previously shot a 6-under 66 in the first round of the Dick Gerber Invitational and finished second in a scorecard playoff at the Madison County Tournament after shooting a 2-under 70.<\/p>\n
The Edwardsville junior had five birdies, including three on the back nine, to close with a 2-under 33.<\/p>\n
Brian Cooper finished third at 2-over 72 and Michael Shaw was fourth at 3-over 73, giving the Tigers three players in the top four. Cooper had five birdies and Shaw had three.<\/p>\n
Luke Maxim rounded out the Edwardsville scoring with a 5-over 75 for 10th place.<\/p>\n
Henry Willenborg shot a 6-over 76 and Drew Capron had a 12-over 82, but neither score counted toward the team total.<\/p>\n
