The son of Ryder Cup hero and major champion Henrik Stenson, Karl Stenson, has committed to play golf at the University of Florida.<\/p>\n

Stenson has confirmed that he will be representing the Florida Gators in one of the most elite golf programmes in the USA.<\/p>\n

Stenson announced the news of his university commitment on social mediaCredit: Not known, clear with picture desk<\/p>\n

The 16-year-old rising star is a junior at Circle Christian School in Orlando, Florida, and is ranked 118th in the Universal Golf Ranking.<\/p>\n

He is also 2,628th in the World Amateur rankings, winning events in his father’s native country Sweden and in Spain last year.<\/p>\n

Now, Stenson is set to play for the 2023 NCAA<\/a> Championship winners, with the University of Florida ranked 3rd in the US in 2026.<\/p>\n

He wrote on social media: “I\u2019m extremely proud and honored to announce that I have verbally committed to play golf at the University of Florida.<\/p>\n

“I want to sincerely thank head coach J.C. Deacon and associate head coach Dudley Hart for the opportunity, trust, and belief they have shown in me throughout this process. <\/p>\n

“I\u2019m incredibly excited to join the Gator family, compete at the highest level, and represent the University of Florida on and off the course.<\/p>\n

“I\u2019m grateful for everyone who has helped me along the way and excited for the work ahead. Go Gators!”<\/p>\n

Following in his father’s footsteps<\/p>\n

Karl will be hoping that his university career will help propel him to similar levels that his father Henrik reached. <\/p>\n

Stenson Sr. has won three Ryder Cups<\/a> with Team Europe in his career, also winning The Open<\/a> in 2016 to claim his only major title so far. <\/p>\n

He also won the Players Championship in 2009, as well as the FedEx Cup in 2013 and an Olympic silver medal.<\/p>\n

Stenson joined LIV Golf<\/a> in 2022 as one of their early recruits, in a decision that saw him sacked as Team Europe’s Ryder Cup captain<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He was subsequently banned by the DP World Tour<\/a> and PGA Tour<\/a>, but he settled his fines and has since regained his membership<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 50-year-old has also recently made his debut in the PGA Tour Champions as part of the senior tour.<\/p>\n

Another famous name in Florida<\/p>\n

Stenson’s son, Karl, is going to be playing for the Florida Gators when he heads to university – and he’ll follow another famous name.<\/p>\n

Currently part of the Gators’ setup is Luke Poulter, son of Ian.<\/p>\n

British golfing legend Ian Poulter<\/a>‘s son is ranked eighth in the amateur golf rankings and is closing in on a PGA Tour place.<\/p>\n

He has been representing Team Great Britain and Ireland<\/a> against the United States in the Walker Cup at Lahinch Golf Club this weekend.<\/p>\n
