{"id":7087,"date":"2026-05-27T22:06:10","date_gmt":"2026-05-27T22:06:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/golf\/7087\/"},"modified":"2026-05-27T22:06:10","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T22:06:10","slug":"hoag-classic-golf-tournament-to-become-senior-players-championship-in-2027","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/golf\/7087\/","title":{"rendered":"Hoag Classic golf tournament to become Senior Players Championship in 2027"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Fred Couples was in a joking mood at a press conference Tuesday morning at Newport Beach Country Club.<\/p>\n<p>The big news of the day was that the PGA Tour <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pgatour.com\/pgatour-champions\/article\/news\/latest\/2026\/05\/26\/pga-tour-announces-hoag-as-title-sponsor-for-senior-players-championship-beginning-in-2027\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">would be launching the Hoag Senior Players Championship<\/a> in Newport Beach next March 22-28.<\/p>\n<p>The newly named tournament will take the place of the <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pgatour.com\/pgatour-champions\/tournaments\/2026\/hoag-classic\/S2026573\/overview\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Hoag Classic<\/a>, which has been held at the club since 1996. Now, the club will host one of five majors on the PGA Tour Champions, with a four-round tournament \u2014 the Hoag Classic was three rounds \u2014 and a larger, $3.5-million total prize pool.<\/p>\n<p>            <img class=\"image\" alt=\"PGA Tour Champions player Fred Couples makes comments during Tuesday's press conference.\"   width=\"1200\" height=\"821\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/golf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1779919569_515_.jpeg\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>         <\/p>\n<p>PGA Tour Champions player Fred Couples makes comments during Tuesday\u2019s press conference.<\/p>\n<p>(Don Leach \/ Staff Photographer)<\/p>\n<p>Couples, a 66-year-old World Golf Hall of Famer who lives in Newport Beach, wants part of that action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t know, why didn\u2019t we do this when I turned 50?\u201d Couples said, during a question-and-answer session led by Newport Beach Country Club General Manager Robin Shelton. \u201cMaybe I could have had a couple more majors.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Couples was a <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/socal\/daily-pilot\/sports\/story\/2023-03-14\/newport-beach-resident-fred-couples-ready-to-tee-it-up-again-in-hoag-classic\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">two-time Hoag Classic champion<\/a>, in 2010 and 2014. He still likes playing at the club. That\u2019s true for players as well as their wives, with Fashion Island within shouting distance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you look at what it takes to host a major, we\u2019ve got everything we need right here \u2014 great sponsors, a fantastic golf course, great community support and tremendous crowds,\u201d Brady said. \u201cThat\u2019s exactly what we need to elevate the stature of the Senior Players Championship. We\u2019re very excited to usher in this new era here in Newport Beach.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>            <img class=\"image\" alt=\"Newport Beach Country Club CEO Kevin Martin, left, greets Hoag executive vice president and CFO Andrew Guarni.\"   width=\"1200\" height=\"914\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/golf\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/1779919569_658_.jpeg\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>         <\/p>\n<p>Newport Beach Country Club CEO Kevin Martin, left, greets Hoag executive vice president and CFO Andrew Guarni during Tuesday\u2019s press conference.<\/p>\n<p>(Don Leach \/ Staff Photographer)<\/p>\n<p>A five-year agreement is in place to ensure that the tour will remain at Newport Beach Country Club through 2031.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the charitable beneficiaries will remain the same for the Hoag Senior Players Championship as they were for the Hoag Classic. <\/p>\n<p>The Hoag Classic, one of the largest philanthropic events on the tour, has raised more than $25 million in total for Hoag\u2019s programs and services, as well as local educational and military charities.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs this event grows, so too will its ability to support health care, education and community programs that improve lives throughout Orange County,\u201d said Andrew Guami, Hoag\u2019s chief financial officer and executive vice president. \u201cWe are excited for what lies ahead, and proud to continue this legacy together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Senior Players, which has been owned and operated by the PGA Tour since it began in 1983, will now be operated by HNS Sports Group. I really do.
