The state government plans to spend $45 million to upgrade the golf course, which opened in 1905.<\/p>\n

The Adelaide Park Lands Association organised a protest on Sunday that involved people tying yellow ribbons to some of the trees to be chopped down.<\/p>\n
Association committee member Tim Jackson told 891 ABC Adelaide on Monday morning the protest could escalate.<\/p>\n
“We certainly are considering more action and action of a different nature, but if we are to do that we want to make sure that our people are safe,” he said.<\/p>\n
Asked if that possibly meant putting their bodies on the line, Mr Jackson said, “Yes, that’s possibly what might occur”.<\/p>\n

Mr Malinauskas told a press conference on Monday morning that it was “perfectly reasonable” for people to protest the redevelopment but they needed to comply with the law.<\/p>\n
“As long as they do that, there’s nothing to be concerned about,” he said.<\/p>\n
He said Labor took the work at the golf course to the March state election.<\/p>\n
“We’ve now got the responsibility of developing on that commitment, which is what we’re doing,”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
he said.<\/p>\n
“The plans are now being executed.<\/p>\n
“We are seeing the tree removal occur just as we committed would be the case and, of course, they’ll be replanted with at least three trees for every tree that gets removed.”<\/p>\n

Adelaide city councillor Keiran Snape said the destruction of the trees was disappointing and the premier could still stop it.<\/p>\n
“Five trees going down is not 585,” he said.<\/p>\n
“Malinauskas can step in today and call a stop work action and stop this destruction.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“It’s in his power to do so, and I urge him to protect these park lands and stop the chop.”<\/p>\n

Lord Mayor Jane Lomax-Smith said people could support Labor but still oppose the golf course redevelopment.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“The reality is that this draconian legislation is using our land \u2014 our community land, basically \u2014 as a development site,” the former Labor minister said.<\/p>\n
“When we lose 600 trees as we’re about to, you have to say that this is not the kind of legislation that people support, even though they have just voted for the government.”<\/p>\n
Trees are also set to be removed in the park lands for the new Women’s and Children’s Hospital on Port Road and the MotoGP track to the east of the CBD.<\/p>\n
