Rave reviews are flooding in for a deeply intimate documentary by Donegal-born artist and filmmaker Myrid Carten.

A Want in Her is being released in cinemas on Friday, October 10th.

The film follows Myrid as she returns from London to Gortahork to search for her alcoholic mother who has gone missing.

The story goes back to the summer of 2020 when Nuala Carten, Myrid’s mother, goes missing from Derry.

Myrid’s search takes her into a feuding family, a contested house; and a history that threatens to take everyone down, including herself.

Intimate, surprising, and often darkly funny conversations with her mother and other family members reveal the trials of loving someone who struggles with addiction and madness.

The film asks the universal question: how can we be with those we love without losing ourselves?

A Want in Her, which premiered at the International Documentary Festival Amsterdam (IDFA) last year, has already picked up the Audience Award and the Documentary Award at the Dublin International Film Festival (DIFF)

Speaking on the upcoming release Director Carten commented, “A Want in Her is a film for the big screen, and I’m delighted it will be in cinemas across Ireland and the UK in October. Some of the best moments of the festival run have been seeing it connect with audiences and getting messages like ‘what a feeling to be in a cinema where everyone is just entirely focused and immersed in what is happening on the screen.”

Among the local screenings will be Century Complex in Letterkenny.
