An articulated truck driver has been nabbed for driving on a motorway – with both hands occupied.

Gardaí in Dublin were out on patrol over the weekend in an unmarked HGV unit when they spotted the driver of an articulated truck on the N7 breaking some very serious rules of the road.

The motorist was not only spotted holding a cup of coffee in one hand, he was holding his phone in the other hand.

A Garda spokesperson wrote: “Our unmarked HGV unit was out on the roads around Dublin this past weekend.

“One of the offences detected was a driver of an articulated truck on the N7 who was observed holding a coffee in one hand with his phone up to his ear in the other hand.”

According to the Road Safety Authority, distracted driving — including mobile phone use — is estimated to be a contributing factor in 20–30 per cent of all collisions on Irish roads.
