The LAN Office in Belgrade has commissioned a comprehensive market study focused on covered agricultural opportunities across the Western Balkan region. This study was officially presented to Dutch stakeholders during the Balkan Business Conference held in The Hague in September 2025.

Designed for business leaders and industry professionals, the report provides a straightforward overview of the sector’s structure, key stakeholders in each country, and the regulatory and trade frameworks shaping market opportunities. It offers valuable insights into policy environments, permit procedures, and trade agreements essential for navigating and expanding in this dynamic region.
As Western Balkan countries progress towards EU accession, local food producers are increasingly required to meet Europe’s strict production standards. Facing climate change and rising food security concerns, producers must adapt to maintain their competitiveness at the EU market.
Shifting from traditional open-field farming to protected cultivation, such as greenhouses and controlled environment agriculture, requires investments in new knowledge, technology, and infrastructure. Although initially resource-intensive, this transition offers a sustainable way forward by reducing environmental impact, increasing productivity and improving competitiveness.
The study also highlights a range of financial support options available to assist producers through this transition. It provides essential guidance for agribusinesses and innovative farmers to adapt to evolving EU standards, seize new market opportunities, and strengthen their position in this rapidly changing, competitive sector.
