LOS ANGELES – Verizon customers across the U.S. were reporting problems with their phone service Friday morning. The company later said there was an issue centered in the Southern California area.

What we know:

Reports of problems began coming in to DownDetector around 5:30 a.m. PT. Users were self-reporting issues with mobile phone service as well as 5G home internet.

Verizon’s network status website revealed at least some problems. A check of multiple addresses across the U.S. – from Florida to California – returned the message, “There is a known issue, and we’re working on a solution.”

What we don’t know:

The full extent of the outage was not immediately clear, nor was the cause. Though Verizon indicated the issue was localized to California, users outside of that area were also reporting problems.

What they’re saying:

“We are aware of an issue impacting some mobile and wireless home internet customers in the Southern California area,” a Verizon spokesperson later told FOX Local. “Our engineers are engaged and we are working quickly to solve the issue. Please visit our Check Network Status page for updates on service in your area. We know how much people rely on Verizon and apologize for any inconvenience. We appreciate your patience.”

What you can do:

Verizon says users should still be able to make calls via wifi if they are able to get to a location where wifi service is available.

Big picture view:

The Friday morning issue was the second in two days for Verizon. Some users also lost service for a few hours early Thursday morning, Newsweek reported.

It was not immediately clear if the two outages were connected in any way.
