Organisers of the Killarney Coffee Cup Project say it is still alive, despite what they say is a lack of government support.
Since it was launched in 2023, the project received support of dozens of local businesses, who stopped selling drinks in disposable coffee cups.
Co-president of Killarney Chamber of Tourism and Commerce, Johnny McGuire, had accused the government of fudging its plans for a ‘latte levy’, which would have charged a fee on disposable cups at the till, similar to the plastic bag levy.
Some businesses in Killarney have withdrawn from the project, and organisers say it is on shaky ground, but very much still alive.
They say the lack of government support is very disheartening, but they will continue to lobby public representatives on the issue.
