A new owner has been confirmed for a historic Georgian residence near Ballybofey, a year after it went ‘sale agreed’ for almost €2 million.

The Landdirect.ie property registration website records that Hateno Limited now owns Edenmore House which sits on 90 acres along the banks of the River Finn. According to the Companies Registration Office (CRO), the largest shareholder in Hateno is Glenmore Farming Group Ltd, headed by well-known local businessman Karol McElhinney. We have asked the company for a comment on their future plans for the estate.

Edenmore House was built around 1771 by Captain John Cochrane and remained in the family until 1954.

The residence underwent a ‘meticulous refurbishment’ in the early 1980s, by renowned architects De Blacam and Meagher.

It had been immaculately maintained into the modern day and was placed on the market in June of last year with a price tag of €1.95 million. According to the auctioneers, Rainey Estate Agents, the spectacular property went ‘sale agreed’ in October 2024.

The historic home was previously owned by the late Peter Murphy, a former solicitor, and his wife Nuala.

They maintained and refurbished the stunning 533 square metre (5,742 sq ft) Georgian-era home over the years.
