Emmerdale spoilers follow.
Emmerdale has revealed an alarming update regarding Cain Dingle ahead of his impending on-screen return, though it doesn’t spell good news for Moira Dingle and his family.
Cain has been searching for the villainous John Sugden, with the iconic character even travelling to France in the hope of avenging the death of his son, Nate Robinson.

Monday’s (13 October) episode of the ITV soap saw Moira under the weather with a cold, with Matty Barton offering to take her place at a meeting. Kyle Winchester asked when his father would return home, but Moira admitted that she didn’t know.
Moira later thanked Matty for filling in, though she was gutted to find out that she had missed Kyle’s football match. She later called Cain and urged him to come home for the sake of his family, though she only reached his voicemail.

She finally got a call, though it wasn’t from Cain. Instead, it was from the police, who informed her that Cain had been arrested and was currently being held in Dover. What exactly did he do during his time away?
The character, who has been a feature of the soap for the majority of the last 25 years, will make his return to the Dales during Wednesday’s (15 October) instalment, but he will be markedly different upon his comeback.
“Cain finally comes back from his wild goose chase in France, but he’s an absolute mess,” our Emmerdale source warns. “He didn’t find John, so he feels as though he’s failed his son Nate and hasn’t got justice for him.

“This feeling of fatherly shame fuels his self-destructive grief, and Cain turns to booze for comfort… Even though Cain still has a family who needs him, he can only focus on the son that he lost.”
“After John’s cruel words in the woods, Cain fears that Nate died hating him, and he won’t rest until he makes it up to him – even though Nate would surely want him to find peace,” they added.
Emmerdale airs on weeknights at 7.30pm on ITV1, and streams on ITVX.
