Coronation Street spoilers follow.

Coronation Street’s Carla Connor and Lisa Swain are arguably soap’s most-loved couple at the moment, so their Best Partnership win at our Inside Soap Awards felt inevitable.

The fictional couple are more commonly known by the ship name ‘Swarla’ – and despite their fans’ delight at the win, none were happier than Alison King, who plays Carla, and Vicky Myers, who plays Lisa.

“It’s absolutely beautiful,” enthuses Vicky, who also picked up the award for Best Actress. “I’m delighted and I think for our relationship – and I don’t mean to take anything away from the other nominees because they’re all brilliant – the story that Lisa and Carla tell, as two women who are soulmates, is special.

“They fell in love, and this is a love story different from any I’ve seen on television. Also, to represent a sapphic couple in a home on Coronation Street in its 65th year, they are making history.”

After a rocky start, Lisa and Carla fell for each other and became the first ever same-sex couple to buy a house together on the iconic Coronation Street.

However, the path to true love hasn’t run smooth, and they’ve been forced to overcome obstacles such as Carla’s killer brother Rob escaping prison and Lisa’s workplace trauma after colleague Craig Tinker’s death.

The most recent – and difficult – hurdle that the couple face, however, is the return of Lisa’s wife Becky Swain. Becky came back from the dead after four years, having faked her death to protect her family.

“Oh, Becky is an absolute nightmare!” jokes Alison. “But I adore Amy [Cudden, who plays her]. It’s such a brilliant dynamic to the family and Becky is obviously a troublemaker, so I’m really enjoying playing opposite her, it’s great”.

After Lisa proposed to Carla, a ‘Swarla’ wedding is surely on the horizon – and the pair have very different opinions on what it might look like!

“I think Lisa would want the world to know she’s with the love of her life. After everything they’ve been through, they, and the whole street, deserve a drama-free wedding, just full of love and joy and happiness,” says Vicky.

“We’re not doing it in the Rovers, we’re going somewhere nice. The street needs a big wedding, 100%!”

“To be honest, I don’t want to get dressed up ever again!” countered Alison. “I’d prefer it if they went to Greece and did it there, then come back and tell people!”
