Jisoo is the BLACKPINK member whose solo work has generated the least commercial impact. In fact, she is the only one who has not released a full-length album yet, although she has released a 5-track EP, ‘AMORTAGE’. In that work, Jisoo devoted herself to 80s pop and 2010s dance-pop, suggesting that her proposal would be the most pop and the least urban of all.
It seems that that idea was a mirage, because ‘Eyed Closed’, the single that unites Jisoo and ZAYN, seems like a song by him. Specifically, from his debut ‘Mind of Mine’ (2016), although much less interesting in production.
‘Eyed Closed’ is a boring mid-tempo that uses a heavy, repetitive rhythm, acoustic guitar strums and tons of reverb to disguise a mediocre and unremarkable melodic composition. Neither Jisoo nor ZAYN seem too eager to play her, especially her. Of course, it doesn’t sound like his song. Zayn puts more effort into it, but there still doesn’t seem to be much chemistry between the two.
‘Eyes Closed’ seems like the typical collaboration arranged by a record company, evidently with the intention of relaunching Jisoo’s solo career, and at the moment it is working relatively: the song is still in position 31 of the most listened to songs on Spotify Global, but on a downward trend.
Of course, Zayn’s presence on ‘Eyes Closed’ is attractive enough, since Malik doesn’t lavish himself too much on the music. ‘Eyes Closed’ is their first single since the release of their album ‘Room Under the Stairs’ in May 2024.
