Two Donegal natives in Boston are behind the first Irish restaurant to make the New York Times list of 50 best restaurants in the US.

McGonagle’s in Dorchester, opened by Moville man Oran Mc Gonagle last December, made the list for its quality cuisine by Donegal Town chef Aidan McGee.

McGee, a master of the Sunday roast, has also brought spice bags and traditional fish and chips to a new level at McGonagle’s, a sister pub to The Dubliner in Downtown Boston.

Reporter Julia Moskin hailed the restaurant as “upscale” but not “a trip to fine-dining’s dark side”.

McGee honed his skills in Killybegs and worked at Michelin-starred restaurants in London before shipping up to Boston in 2021.

Mc Gonagle, who has lived in New England since 2009 and serves as operations manager and director of the East Coast Tavern Group, first heard that McGee was in town through a Tommy, Hector & Laurita Podcast recorded at Boston Common.

The East Coast Tavern Group operates several bars and restaurants across the city, such as Carrie Nation, Scholars, Roxanne and Emmet’s.

The two Donegal natives soon decided to team up, with McGee taking charge of the kitchen at The Dubliner, which Mc Gonagle opened in 2022. Since then, they’ve been redefining traditional Irish flavours and serving what they proudly call the perfect pint.

McGonagle’s Pub Restaurant in Dorchester, a neighbourhood in Boston

On learning about the new McGonagle’s Pub’s prestigious placement on the New York Times list, the team said: “We’re beyond proud to share that McGonagle’s Pub has been named to @nytimes “50 Best Restaurants” list. The first time an Irish Pub has made this list. To see our spot on Neponset Ave celebrated on such a global stage is truly incredible.

“This honor is a testament to the hard work, passion of our entire staff—from the kitchen to the bar to the floor.

“And of course, to our customers and community—thank you for supporting us, celebrating with us, and making McGonagle’s the place it is today.

“Here’s to many more pints, plates and good times.”
