Cheryl Tweedy, formerly Cheryl Cole, has made a rare public appearance, as the emotional anniversary of the death of her ex-boyfriend, Liam Payne, draws near. Liam, who was also the father of their son, Bear, died on 16 October 2024.
The Girls Aloud star stepped out to celebrate her bandmate Nicola Robert‘s 40th birthday at the Lanesborough Hotel in Belgravia. She was joined by Kimberley Walsh and Nicola’s closest friends for a glam dinner.
Cheryl, who lives a very private life, is not often seen at events. This particular appearance, which happened on 13 October, comes only three days before the one year anniversary of One Direction star Liam Payne’s death.
She was dressed in all black for the outing, sporting a black blazer, trousers and a bra top underneath her jacket. He locks were in a down, wavy style and she had a glowy makeup for the occasion.
Despite the upcoming anniversary, Cheryl was able to have a good time with her friends and was seen smiling as she was driven away from the the hotel in a black car.
Meanwhile, Nicola attended her birthday dinner in a floor-length red gown, with a black leather clutch and her hair done in an up-do. While Nadine did not attend the event, Kimberley arrived with her husband, Justin Scott. She wore a burgundy knee-length dress, while he wore a black turtle neck with a beige blazer and trousers.

Cheryl’s rare public appearance comes days before her ex-boyfriend Liam Payne’s tragic death anniversary. Liam was aged just 31 when he died on October 16 last year.
Liam and Cheryl were in a relationship for two years, from 2016 to 2018. While the pair first met in 2010, when he auditioned for X Factor while Cheryl was a judge on the show, they did not get together until after her separation from French restauranteur Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini years later.
In March 2017, Cheryl gave birth to their son, Bear Payne. Just over a year later, in July 2018, the couple announced their split. They remained close, however, and Cheryl was named the co-administrator of Liam’s estate, alongside music lawyer Richard Bray in May 2025, after he died intestate.
Liam died aged 31 in October 2024. His death was caused injuries sustained after he fell from the balcony of a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Court documents showed the total value of Liam’s estate to be £28.6 million but this was reduced to £24.3 million after debts were paid. While Cheryl and Richard are the administrators, they have limited powers, and are only permitted to “preserve the deceased’s estate until a general grant is made”.
Before his death, Liam was releasing solo music, but he is best known for being part of the band One Direction. The boyband, which formed on X Factor, was one of the most successful in the world before they broke up in 2016.
Cheryl is also part of a world famous music group, as she is a member of Girls Aloud. The group was formed on Popstars: The Rivals in 2002 and featured Cheryl, Nicola, Kimberley, Nadine Coyle and Sarah Harding. They achieved 20 UK Top Ten singles and four number ones.

Girls Aloud stopped performing in 2013. In 2021, Sarah Harding announced she was diagnosed with terminal breast cancer and died later that year.
Last year, the remaining members have reformed to do an anniversary tour. Before she died, Sarah told her bandmates that she wanted them to carry on and honour her and the band’s legacy, and during the show, they performed some of the songs whilst images of Sarah were projected behind them.
