Diane Keaton’s family breaks their silence on what led to the Hollywood legend’s death.

The Oscar winner passed away at age 79 on Oct. 11, and her family is now confirming she died of pneumonia, according to PEOPLE.

“The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11,” the family shared in a statement to the outlet.

The family added, “She loved her animals and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her.”

When news first broke, we learned that Keaton’s health took a turn in her final months, and the rapid decline shocked her loved ones.

“She declined very suddenly, which was heartbreaking for everyone who loved her,” the family shared.

The actress rose to fame in the 1970s when she took on the role in “The Godfather” as Kay Adams, including several movies with director Woody Allen. She later won an Academy Award for Best Actress in 1977’s “Annie Hall.” Over the course of her decades-long career, she worked repeatedly with director Nancy Meyers and led the “Book Club” franchise.

Many Hollywood stars paid tribute to Keaton, including Allen, who penned a lengthy essay reflecting on their relationship on and off screen. Her “First Wives Club” co-stars Goldie Hawn and Bette Midler also honored the late actress with touching tributes.

Keaton is survived by her two kids, Dexter, 29, and Duke Keaton, 25.
