Pharmacists across the country report steady demand for flu vaccines this season, with interest matching last year’s levels, according to Yiannis Dagres, vice president of the Attica Pharmaceutical Association.
Flu activity remains very low, though the Health Ministry notes that seasonal influenza typically peaks between February and March. Last season, 196 people were admitted to intensive care units and 86 died from confirmed flu cases, while 3.8 million people were vaccinated, slightly fewer than the previous year.
Six flu vaccines are available this year, including two “enhanced” versions for people over 65 and transplant recipients. For the first time, a nasal spray vaccine for children aged 2-5 is available, though it is not yet reimbursed. The National Public Health Organization urges vulnerable groups to get the updated LP.8.1 Covid-19 vaccine, as viral levels are expected to rise. Flu and Covid-19 shots can be administered simultaneously in different injection sites.
