Multiple miscarriages and a five-year struggle to conceive caused heartbreak for one North Tyneside woman who longed to be a mum. Claire Robson experienced several miscarriages before giving birth to a healthy baby boy.

The 35-year-old, from Shiremoor, said the experience put her “in a black hole of sadness” as it sent her mental health on a downward spiral.

The IT Operations Manager said: “We tried for five years with multiple miscarriages and it really took a toll on my mental health. My eating habits reflected this, I wasn’t looking after myself and I was just in a black hole of sadness.”

After welcoming her son into the world in October 2022, the mum-of-one said she felt “whole again” and her little boy had “healed” her. But when she looked back at photos with her son in his first two years, she started to feel that something needed to change.

Claire said: “I fell pregnant in February 2022, and gave birth to a healthy baby boy in October 2022 and I felt whole again, happy and healed. [But later] I started looking at pictures of myself with him and realised I really needed to do something.

“I wanted to be able to run around with him when he got older.”

So she joined Slimming World in June 2024 with the aim of losing some weight and improving her fitness so she could live a happy and healthy life with her son. And now she has lost 4st 4.5lbs, slimming back to a size 16.

Claire said: “I had never really let my size get me down, I was always a believer in body image being positive and just enjoying life. But I knew I could do better for myself and gain more confidence if I slimmed back to a size 16.”

During her journey, Claire has reduced the amount of chocolate and wine she consumes, as well as the number of takeaways. Now she eats fresh foods and pickled gherkins have become a favourite snack.

She also enjoys snacking on cucumbers and carrots with a little bit of hummus. And for meals she said she loves “burger pasta, chicken curry, potato wedges and rainbow rice”.

Reflecting on how far she has come, Claire said: “I can cross my legs, do yoga comfortably, ride my bike comfortably, walk further and I can fit in the bath.

“I feel so content and happy to fit into size 16 clothes, I feel like me again.”

Claire added: “I have changed my target recently because I genuinely am so happy with my body and my size right now, and I’ve loved living my life. It’s not always about the number on the scales it’s about how you feel in your own skin.”
