Drivers in Waterford are being urged to take extra care this morning after overnight downpours left large amounts of surface water on many roads.

A Status Orange rain warning issued by Met Éireann for Waterford and Cork overnight brought intense rainfall to the region, leading to localised flooding in parts of Waterford City and surrounding areas.

While the worst of the rain has now cleared, driving conditions remain hazardous, with standing water reported on several major routes and secondary roads. Commuters are advised to allow extra time for journeys and to avoid flooded areas where possible.

Emergency services and local council crews have been responding to reports of flooding since early morning, with efforts ongoing to clear blocked drains and ensure roads remain passable.

Residents have also reported minor flooding in low-lying parts of the city, though conditions are said to be improving as rainwater gradually drains away.

Met Éireann has since lifted the orange warning, but a yellow advisory remains in place for the southeast, as further scattered showers are expected later today. Temperatures are forecast to remain mild, with fresh southwesterly winds easing through the afternoon.

Motorists are reminded to slow down, keep headlights on, and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles in wet conditions.
