Thiruvananthapuram: The state government is moving ahead with plans to increase the welfare pension. The proposal under consideration is to raise the amount from the current ₹1,600 to ₹1,800 — a hike of ₹200.
In the 2021 LDF election manifesto, one of the major promises was to raise the welfare pension to ₹2,500. To achieve that, an additional ₹900 increase from the current amount would be required.
However, the government’s immediate focus is to raise the pension before the upcoming local body elections. Though the distribution of pensions had been delayed for a long period, the backlog has now been cleared, and payments have returned to normal monthly schedule. The decision to clear pending payments came in the wake of the setback faced in the Lok Sabha elections.
Indications are that the official announcement of the pension hike will be made during the special session of the Legislative Assembly to be convened in November. The session, called on November 1, is expected to highlight the government’s achievements so far and outline upcoming initiatives. The announcement of the welfare pension hike is likely to be part of this session.
