Amazon Web Services outage downs Snapchat, Fortnite and more
An Amazon Web Services outage has downed leading websites and apps, including Snapchat, Roblox and Lyft.
Thousands of Venmo users reported issues using the banking platform hours after a widespread Amazon Web Services outage impacted numerous websites on Oct. 20.
According to outage tracker Downdetector, nearly 6,000 Venmo users said they were experiencing problems as of 1:03 p.m. ET. The issues were believed to be related to the AWS outage, per Downdetector.
The outage appears to have peaked around 11 a.m. ET, with over 8,000 users reporting outages at that time, according to Downdetector.
Amazon Web Services, a cloud computing service run by Amazon, said it experienced a significant outage early on Oct. 20.
As of 6:35 a.m. ET, AWS said in a statement that the issue has been mostly resolved and it would “continue to work toward full resolution.”
The outage began around 3 a.m. ET on Oct. 20 and was rooted in its US-EAST-1 Region, which is based in Northern Virginia, according to AWS.
The cloud computing service said it believes the outage was caused by an underlying issue with DNS, or domain name systems, which helps translate website names into IP addresses.
Venmo was among the websites that experienced significant spikes in outage reports during the AWS outage, according to Downdetector.
