Maika Monroe has certified her status as a Scream Queen. Among her most recent horror projects are 2024’s Longlegs and the upcoming The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, but one of her key roles was in the 2015 cult classic It Follows.
The psychological horror had a world premiere at the 2014 Cannes Film Festival, and it headed to theaters one year later in March 2015. The movie received critical acclaim and was a commercial success, so a sequel was confirmed. Speaking to CBR’s Grae Drake to promote the upcoming remake of The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, Monroe also dished on the filming sequel for the highly anticipated sequel They Follow.
Asked about the rumors that the sequel would start production this year, Monroe replied, “Has it? I have no idea. There’s no update.” She continued, “No one knows. It’s a mystery. No, we have not shot it, we’ll see what happens. I don’t know.”
The actress explained, “I do know that, you know, we have all the pieces. It’s really scheduling. It’s been the hardest thing for both, [director] David [Robert Mitchell] has been doing, he was doing big studio film, and then I’ve been busy.”
She teased, “But it seems like stars might align very soon. Fingers crossed. Because I really, I really want it to. I really want it to. I think people will be very happy.”
It Follows, which centered around Monroe’s Jay, who discovers she is the latest recipient of a fatal curse after sleeping with her new boyfriend, was a massive success. The film holds a near-perfect 95% Certified Fresh score from the critics, but an unimpressive 66% from the audience. However, the horror, produced on a modest $1.3 million budget, was a massive success, grossing $23.3 million worldwide during its theatrical run. There were conversations about a sequel in 2015, but it wasn’t officially confimed until October 2023, with the director set to return, as well.

On the red carpet for the upcoming The Hand That Rocks the Cradle remake, she also opened up about the upcoming It Follows sequel, per Discussing Film. “I was sent the script and I thought it was incredible, and also it’s very different from the original,” she teased.
Monroe continued, “The original is a little more heightened and dramatic, and this, I think it’s quite grounded, and it sort of follows the story of these two women who are mentally dealing with a lot, and I thought it was an interesting take on it.” She also teased that the sequel might start production next year.
The remake of the 1992 film, The Hand that Rocks the Cradle, is set to hit Hulu on Oct. 22. The film stars Ahsoka’s Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Caitlyn Morales, Maika Monroe as Polly Murphy, and Raúl Castillo as Miguel Morales.
It Follows is streaming on HBO Max.
