It has become highly likely to attract the “National Artificial Intelligence (AI) Computing Center” in Jeollanam-do, a massive national project worth 2.5 trillion won.

According to South Jeolla Province on the 22nd, the Ministry of Science and ICT closed the public offering for the national AI computing center construction project on the same day, and a consortium of large companies led by Samsung SDS applied alone. This project is a key infrastructure construction project promoted by the government to strengthen the competitiveness of the AI industry.

Major ICT companies such as KT, NAVER Cloud, and Kakao participated in the Samsung SDS consortium, and the site of Haenam Solar City Data Center Park was suggested as the center’s construction site. The consortium finally chose Jeonnam after reviewing three places: Gwangju, Jeonnam, and Jeonbuk. As it is an exclusive application, Jeollanam-do, which was actually selected by Samsung SDS, is likely to be confirmed as the host region.

Haenam Solar City has already been highly evaluated for its power infrastructure and site competitiveness as the country’s largest 98MW solar complex has been built. The Samsung SDS consortium reportedly prioritized location conditions and power supply stability over political factors.

Kang Won-won, deputy governor of the economy of Jeollanam-do Province, met with Kim Dong-cheol, president of KEPCO, and Kim Young-rok met with Samsung SDS in person on the 14th and delivered a pledge of support to express his willingness to attract it. Last month, Samsung SDS inquired about the timing of the construction of the 154kV substation in Solar City and the possibility of providing adjacent sites, and on the 10th, it visited the site in person to check the power, water, and maintenance conditions.

The Ministry of Science and ICT will confirm private participants through technical and policy evaluation (stage 1) in November and financial evaluation (stage 2) in December. After that, after establishing a special purpose corporation (SPC) by the first half of next year and completing the implementation agreement and investment, Jeollanam-do will immediately begin the site maintenance and licensing process.

If the project proceeds smoothly, it is expected that the completion of the national AI computing center will be possible at the end of 2028. An official from Jeollanam-do said, “We have laid the foundation for a future new city that combines the AI industry and the energy industry by attracting the national AI computing center and the open AI-only data center. We will continue to attract semiconductor companies starting with the data center and then leap into an energy-oriented city in name and reality.”
