Isaac Heller, Chief Administrative Officer of Ascension Saint Thomas DeKalb Hospital

No matter who you are or where you live breast cancer may touch your life.

Breast cancer screening and early detection play an important role in your health. Screening tests can help find breast cancer at an early age when the chances of survival are highest.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Isaac Heller, Chief Administrative Officer of Ascension Saint Thomas DeKalb Hospital, urges you to have a mammogram, especially if you are age 40 or older.

“Approximately one in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. There are projections that say in 2025 over 316,000 women will be diagnosed and 2,800 men will be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer. The positive side to that when caught early, the five year survival rate is actually 99%. There are over four million survivors of breast cancer in the United States today,” said Heller.

“At Ascension Saint Thomas DeKalb Hospital we offer screening mammograms. Generally if you are over age 40 you can talk to a provider and see if you are a good candidate for a screening mammogram. You can schedule your mammogram by calling the Ascension Saint Thomas DeKalb Hospital Radiology Department at 615-215-5310 during business hours Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m.” Heller said.

“There is a program called MD Save and it’s a good program for those with high-deductible insurance or those patients who don’t have insurance or pay themselves. You can go to the MD Save website in your search bar and type in your zip code and if you are near Smithville, DeKalb Hospital will pop up in the search. By selecting that, you can purchase a voucher for a tomosynthesis or 3D mammogram screening and you bring that to the hospital, and we’ll perform it for you. The 3D screening Mammogram is $240,” said Heller.
