The number of unemployed rose to around 259,000 in September, up 32,000 from a year earlier, according to Statistics Finland.

The number cruncher’s latest labour force survey found that unemployment increased across all age groups compared with the same month in 2024.

At the same time, the total number of employed people also grew, reaching 2,589,000 in September — 16,000 higher than a year ago.

Employment among men rose by 30,000, while the number of employed women fell by 14,000 compared with September 2024.

The unemployment trend rate, or long-term direction, remained high at 9.9 per cent in September. In August, the trend rate surpassed 10 percent, marking one of the bleakest readings in years.

Figures published yesterday indicated that more businesses closed down last month. The number of bankruptcies in Finland rose in September compared to the same month a year ago, according to Statistics Finland.
