Norwich City continued their dreadful start to the Championship season, losing 1-0 against Derby County at Pride Park last night.
That result left the club languishing in the relegation zone, having taken just eight points from their opening eight fixtures. In fact, their last win in the league came all way back in August.
Considering the club had promotion aspirations coming into the campaign, that run of form has led to quite a bit of criticism from supporters. That is something that led to a bizarre response from Ireland defender Shane Duffy in the aftermath of last night’s fixture.

Shane Duffy Under Fire For Bizarre Social Media Attack On Norwich City Fan
After the loss to Derby County, Norwich City manager suggested that this season was always going to be a difficult one for the club due to the players that left during the summer.
Those words have not gone down well among the supporters. When one particular fan criticised Manning for his comments, he would be subjected to a rather odd set of insults from Shane Duffy on social media.
Norwich are in the bottom 3, not won for 2 months with a head coach under real pressure and now our centre back Shane Duffy, who hasn’t kicked a ball this season is calling a fan a knob and a gimp. This football club man #ncfc pic.twitter.com/4h4i5jjpfM

Those were not the only posts from the Irishman.
Duffy would reply to a number of users on X, with all of the posts having since been deleted.

A strange one.
Unsurprisingly, this behaviour from Shane Duffy has resulted in quite a bit of criticism.
Just in from work and catching up on the #NCFC fallout. Blimey. If those tweets are really from Shane Duffy, there’s surely a “meeting without coffee” coming between player and club. And surely big, big changes are imminent.

So to recap, last night Norwich dropped into the bottom 3 for the first time since being relegated in 2009, Liam Manning tried to gaslight us into believing the aim was never top 6, and Shane Duffy took to twitter to call a fan a knob and a gimp. Truly an iconic day. #ncfc

Shane Duffy beefing with fans, our 7th loss in 11 games, putting ourselves in the relegation zone, and a board who can’t make their mind up on what they do and don’t want
By far the lowest the club has been in some time, sleepwalking to League One.
What a mess. #NCFC

The player would later apologise for the remarks.
Duffy took to X on Wednesday afternoon, saying the comments came out of ‘frustration’.
It’s been a tough period, and seeing the criticism towards the team has been hard. We have to accept the criticism right now. Everyone here cares a lot about performing well, and sometimes emotions get the better of you when things aren’t going as planned. (1/2)

My comment came out of frustration, not a lack of respect for the supporters — we really do value your passion and backing. I apologise for my comments. (2/2)

Shane Duffy has yet to play a single minute of football this season. In fact, he has made the matchday squad on only one occasion, although he has been unavailable in recent weeks due to injury.
While it has been suggested that the defender is close to a return to full fitness, this outburst is unlikely to do his chances of returning to the team any favours.
