According to the annual report by the sea turtle protection organization Archelon, the Kyparissia Gulf in the western Peloponnese experienced one of the most productive Caretta Caretta nesting seasons in recent decades.
Around 6,100 nests were recorded, marking a 74% increase compared to the average of the past 12 years.
Kyparissia Gulf remains the leading nesting site for Caretta sea turtles in both Greece and the wider Mediterranean.
Together with the Bay of Laganas in Zakynthos, it hosts more than 57% of all Caretta caretta nests within the European Union.
Archelon attributes this success to decades of systematic nest protection and stresses the importance of fully implementing the national action plan for the loggerhead turtle to safeguard this conservation achievement.
