A holidaymaker has died and another is in a critical condition after reportedly falling nearly 20ft in Lanzarote when a hotel railing ‘gave way’.
The incident happened early this morning at a hotel in the popular resort of Costa Teguise, Mirror UK reports.
A 56-year-old British man was pronounced dead at the scene, while a 54-year-old British man was seriously injured and rushed to Doctor Jose Molina Orosa Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
Emergency services were called to the hotel at around 1.30am after reports that two people had fallen from a ‘considerable height’.
Members of the Canary Islands Emergency Service (SUC), local police and Spanish Civil Guard attended to the scene.
Local reports indicate that the railing that gave way was located in an elevated area of the hotel complex.
The Civil Guard has opened an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
A spokesperson for the UK Foreign Office told Mirror UK: “We are providing support to the family of a British man who has died and to the family of a British man who has been injured in Spain.”
In August, a British tourist on holiday in Spain was left with horrifying injuries after he fell off a hotel balcony. The 22-year-old holidaymaker fell from the third floor of the building in Ibiza at around 8pm on August 18, suffering injuries to his chest and head.
