Police say that a security alert that took place overnight in the Waterside area of Derry City has now ended, after the discovery of a “viable” explosive device.
The alert began shortly after 5:30pm yesterday evening, when Police received reports that a device had been left at a residential property in the Campion Court area.
Local residents were evacuated for a time, as Police Officers and Ammunition Technical Officers examined the suspicious device.
Police say that the device was deemed to be viable, and was made safe before being removed for further forensic examination.
In a statement, Police said that “this device posed a serious risk to the local community. We’re thankful it did not detonate before it was discovered.”
“We would ask that the public be vigilant to any suspicious items or behaviour in their area, and report any concerns to us immediately.”
“Officers will continue to maintain a presence in the area today as we conduct further enquiries.”
Anyone with any information in relation to the incident has been asked to contact police on 101, quoting reference number 1161 25/10/25.
