Two men have been arrested after gardaí seized three firearms and ammunition from a car stopped in Charleville on Wednesday night.

Gardaí from Charleville Garda Station say they stopped a car at a service station in the town while on patrol at approximately 11pm.

During a search of the vehicle, officers uncovered and seized three firearms and ammunition. They also seized approximately €800 worth of suspected diamorphine from the occupants of the vehicle, men in their 30s and 40s, respectively.

The men were arrested and brought to a Garda Station in Co Cork where they are currently being detained under the provisions of Section 30 of Offences Against the State Act, 1939.

Gardaí conducted a number of follow-up searches at domestic residences in Co Cork on Thursday, August 21, resulting in the seizure of further ammunition.

A garda spokesperson told the Irish Examiner that the seized firearms will be sent for further ballistic testing and forensic analysis, and the seized drugs will be forwarded to Forensic Science Ireland (FSI) for analysis. 

“Investigations are ongoing,” the spokesperson said.
