Jesse Plemons is explaining his homework to me. In Bugonia, another trippy, absurdist head-scratcher from Oscar-nominated Greek auteur Yorgos Lanthimos, the talented Texan portrays a disillusioned conspiracist named Teddy who hatches a frightening plan to kidnap the millionaire CEO of a major pharmaceutical company (Emma Stone’s Michelle).

He thinks she’s an alien, sent here to study our world before her people destroy it. She tries to reason with her abductor’s rational side, if such a thing exists. It all gets a bit weird, as you’d expect from Lanthimos, and perhaps even Plemons – an actor who has played his fair share of disquieting oddballs.
