Tributes have been paid to a pensioner who was killed as he crossed the road after getting off a bus in Co Derry.
John Shaw (69) was killed in a tragic accident in the Grange Road area of Magherafelt at around 5.50pm on Thursday evening.
It is understood that Mr Shaw got off a bus and was struck by a car as he crossed the road. He was later pronounced dead at the scene.
Tributes have been paid to the well-liked pensioner, who is survived by his wife and children.
Mr Shaw had a passion for attending dog shows and had won a number of prizes in recent years.
Local councillor Denise Johnston told The Irish News Mr Shaw was “very much loved and respected by the community”.
“I want to pass on my sincere condolences to his wife, Martina, to his children, to his brothers and sisters,“ she told The Irish News.
“We know that they will be absolutely devastated by this accident and that the community, we have a very tight-knit community around here, and I know that they will wrap their arms around the family and support them in the days and weeks ahead.
“He would have been well known. He was a good, decent man, very much loved and respected by the community.”
Tributes have been paid online to Mr Shaw.
“Well to say I gutted is a under statement I have lost a great friend in John Shaw we had some great adventures? John was the life and soul of the party. I will miss you my old friend”, one person said.
“It is with a heavy heart I have learned of the passing of a great friend and a great country sports person John Shaw. I am still looking at your funny text you sent to me on Monday night, John you always cheered me up and we will truly miss you. May the angels in heaven take care of you and may your gentle soul rest in peace,” another added.
His funeral arrangements have yet to be published.
PSNI Chief Inspector Celeste Simpson from the Collision Investigation Unit said: “Police received a report shortly after 5.50pm of a collision involving a car and a pedestrian in the Grange Road area.
“Our officers attended, supported by colleagues from partner emergency services. However, sadly, the pedestrian – a man aged 69 – was confirmed deceased at the scene.
”The Grange Road was closed for some time but has since reopened.
“Collision Investigation Unit detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances of this collision. We are particularly keen to hear from anyone who witnessed the incident or who may hold digital footage which could assist with our enquiries.
“This includes dash-cam, mobile, CCTV or other material. Contact police on 101, quoting reference number 1576 of 6/11/25.”
