Cork people are being encouraged to contribute photos of the northern lights to help compile Ireland’s largest archive of aurora borealis images.
Led by Alexandra Ruth Fogg, postdoctoral fellow with Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS), the initiative asks people to share photographs taken during the Northern Lights displays in May and October of 2024, which were caused by some of the most intense geomagnetic storms of the 21st century.
Spectacular images were captured across the island of Ireland.

Now DIAS researchers are asking people to share these images as part of a citizen science research project.
Ms Fogg said that data and images gathered will provide valuable insights into space weather and contribute to Ireland’s understanding of this natural phenomenon.
