Roy Keane has shared a nostalgic snap as he reminisces on his first steps into the world of professional football. The Irish legend shared a sweet photograph showing off his old passport from when he was just a boy, taken before he jetted off to England and kick-started his soccer stardom.
Mayfield man Roy, 54, began his career as a midfielder in his native Cork, first lining out for Rockmount FC before moving on to League of Ireland side Cobh Ramblers. The Irish Mirror Sport reports that Roy joined Brian Clough’s Nottingham Forest in 1993 before he moved to Manchester United three years later for what was, at the time, a record transfer fee.

On Thursday, Roy Keane took to social media to share a photograph of his teenage self, long before his fame as one of the greatest midfielders Manchester United has ever seen. He showed off his old passport from when he was just 16 years old. Captioning in the post, Keane wrote: “I didn’t have much, just a dream, great hair and a point to prove.”
The passport photo was taken just a year before his professional journey began in 1988 at Cobh Ramblers. Now 36 years later, Keane is still a massive Cobh fan. He watched Cobh’s first-division play-off semi-final last month, a game which they lost to Treaty United. Keane’s passport post has attracted well over a thousand comments on Instagram, with the likes of Denise O’Sullivan and Celtic legend Stiliyan Petrov commenting on the picture.
