Robert Sugden’s (Ryan Hawley) relationship with Kev Townsend (Chris Coghill) is deeply complex in Emmerdale.
Robert met Kev when he was sent to Hotten prison during the pandemic. At first, Robert kept his distance, but sharing a tiny cell for months on end meant it wasn’t long until they started to get to know each other.
Eventually, Robert and Kev became pals and then secret lovers. As far as Robert was concerned, he wasn’t getting out of prison anytime soon, so he began to create a life in there with Kev.
To his surprise, Robert then learnt there was a small chance he could be freed thanks to new evidence coming to light. He told Kev about the possibility of an appeal, but he displayed signs of possessiveness and panicked at the thought of Robert leaving him.
He then stabbed himself and asked Robert to marry him. The character was so focused on Kev’s recovery and eventually convinced himself that the appeal wouldn’t work anyway, so he stopped thinking about it.
Kev continuing his relationship with Robert on the outside was never going to work, because Robert is destined to be with Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller). In recent scenes, Robert decided to end things with Kev, which left him heartbroken.

In upcoming episodes, Kev’s on the edge as he ends up arguing with Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb) over some spilt coffee.
Robert diffuses the situation, and Kev realises that his impending death is the best way to keep him close.
Unaware of the truth, Robert feels guilty about abandoning Kev and is grateful when Aaron agrees to the idea of him nursing Kev towards the end.
The next day, Robert and Aaron head to Dale View for the house warming party and Kev decides to go along as well.

When Kev arrives, he stumbles up to the microphone and hits the karaoke. He is half-cut by this point, and ends up embarrassing himself in front of Robert. Feeling a fool, Kev leaves.
Robert finds Kev a while later and promises to be there for him when the end comes, and it leaves Kev delighted.
Later that evening, Kev is seen holding a gun as he plans his next move.
Is he about to aim it at Robert in revenge for breaking his heart?
