Ninajirachi is a strong contender for Album of the Year

Just ask triple j! Ninajirachi just took out two of the national youth broadcaster’s annual J Awards, namely, Australian Music Video of the Year and Australian Album of the Year.

I Love My Computer is the debut album from Central Coast producer Ninajirachi, or simply Nina Wilson to her parents.

She’s a two-time triple j Unearthed High finalists who’s been making music since she was 12 years old. She brands her sound as “girl EDM”— a playful update on the 2010s electronic dance music genre dominated by men.

For my money, I’ve already hailed I Love My Computer as one of the year’s best. In a review where I likened it to Australia’s own answer to Charli XCX’s Brat, I called it an “instant classic that rewires nostalgia into a deliriously fun, addictive, innovative rush of rave-ready electro-pop”.

It’s a big reason Ninajirachi leads this year’s ARIA nods, with eight nominations, including Best Solo Artist, Best Independent and Electronic Release.

From ARIA Hall of Famer to Album of the Year?

Singer-songwriter Missy Higgins was inducted into the Hall of Fame last year, and now she’s back in a major category for her sixth album, The Second Act.

Billed as spiritual sequel to her influential, blockbuster debut The Sound Of White, and released exactly 20 years later, to the day, The Second Act exhibited a similar depth of honesty about life and love.

The key difference? It found the adult musician sifting through the emotional fallout of her divorce from ex-husband Dan Lee.

It’s a powerful showcase of soul-baring, seasoned songwriting that’ll have you reaching for the tissues, with confessionals around the complicated truths of parenting and love lost.

It is, in my humble opinion, one of the most quietly profound, nuanced break-up albums you’ll ever hear.

You Am I set for ARIA Hall of Fame induction

You Am I, the Aussie alternative rock band led by Tim Rogers, will join the ARIA Hall of Fame tonight, more than 35 years after they formed in 1989.

The band are beloved for records including Hi Fi Way (which celebrated its 30th anniversary this year); Hourly, Daily; and #4 Record, as well as singles ‘Purple Sneakers’, ‘Berlin Chair’ and ‘Heavy Heart’.

Those three records, all from the 90s, made You Am I the very first Aussie band to release three successive records that all debuted at #1 on the ARIA albums chart.

‘Berlin Chair’ landed at #81 earlier this year on triple j’s Hottest 100 of Australian Songs.

And they’ve won a whoppin’ 10 ARIA Awards over their career, including Album of the Year for Hourly, Daily in 1996.

They’re still touring and dropped their latest record in 2021: The Lives of Others, which peaked at #2 on the ARIA album chart.

You Am I are effectively the first of their generation of 90s alternative rockers to land in the ARIA Hall of Fame, following the induction of ’00s rockers Jet in 2023.

To get into the ARIA Hall of Fame, an act must have started a career and achieved prominence at least 20 years ago.

Last year, pop singer Missy Higgins was inducted.

G’day, it’s ARIA o’clock

Hello friends, it’s me, Hannah Story, your ABC Logies correspondent moonlighting at the ARIAs.

I’m on board to help Al and Georgie to cover all the action (*vroom vroom*) from the Aussie music industry’s night of nights — one I’ve been lucky enough to cover before in my previous life as a music journalist.

So, what do we reckon? Who’s going to take out Album of the Year? My money’s on Amyl and the Sniffers.

Your nominees

With 29 categories spanning multiple genres, the ARIA nominations reflect the strength and diversity of the local industry this year.

Leading the nominees, with a whopping eight nods, is Central Coast producer Ninajirachi.

Her debut album I Love My Computer is vying in major categories like Album of the Year, Best Solo Artist, Best Independent and Electronic Release.

Just behind Ninajirachi is Dom Dolla, with seven nominations.

The globally revered DJ and producer is in the running for Best Solo Artist, Best Australian Live Act, Best Video, Song of the Year, Best Engineer and Producer, and is the one to beat for Best Dance/Electronic Release – the category he’s conquered three times before.

Amyl and the Sniffers have also had a phenomenal year and have six nominations for their third album.

Al Newstead writes more about the nominees here:
