The estate, which extends to about 1,075 acres and is set on the shores of Lough Foyle, includes about 956 acres of productive arable land, a three-bedroom farmhouse and farm buildings.

It has been sold to Paul Connolly, described by selling agents Savills as a “local businessman”.

Savills, together with joint agents WJ Smith, handled the sale on behalf of the personal representatives of the estate of the late The Rt Honourable Earl Castle Stewart.

James Butler of Savills said: “We are delighted to have completed the sale of such an important agricultural estate in Northern Ireland.

“The purchaser plans to continue to operate the current farming enterprise on the estate, ensuring the property remains a thriving and active part of the local community – a very positive outcome for this notable holding.”

Speaking when the estate went on the market in June, WJ Smith said: “I have been involved in the letting and management of The Eglinton Estate for over 40 years and can safely say it is, without doubt, a highly productive and fertile block of land.

“The large, easily accessed fields together with their flat topography are a pleasure to work on for both arable and livestock farmers alike.”
