A worker has died in what is understood to be a workplace accident at the Tayto factory in Co Meath.

Tayto Snacks Ltd released a statement this afternoon in which it said there had been a fatal incident at its Ashbourne site.

“It is with profound shock and sadness that Tayto Snacks Ltd. confirms that a fatal incident involving an employee of an independent potato supplier occurred at our Ashbourne, Co Meath site this morning,”

The company said that gardaí and emergency services were quickly on the scene and that it is helping the gardaí with their inquiries.

“We will also be working closely with all parties including the Health & Safety Authority,” the company said.

“The safety and wellbeing of all who attend on our site is our highest priority, and we are committed to supporting any investigations into today’s tragic incident. The next of kin of the deceased have now been informed, and our thoughts are with their family, friends, and colleagues as they come to terms with this terrible loss.”

Tayto managing director John O’Connor said: “We are devastated by today’s incident and our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and colleagues impacted by this tragic loss of life.”

Around 300 people work at the factory in Co Meath, where products include Tayto, Hunky Dorys, King and O’Donnell’s crisps.
