Gardaí have arrested a man during a series of checkpoints carried out across parts of Donegal yesterday during their ‘Day of Action’ on drugs.
The operation took place in the Milford and west Donegal areas with the assistance of a specially trained sniffer dog.
Searches under warrant (Misuse of Drugs Act) were carried out and checkpoints and immigration inspections were conducted at various locations in the greater Milford area.
“A number of drug related offences were detected,” a garda spokesperson said.
“One male was arrested in connection with one of these incidents. He was questioned and released pending the submission of a file (to the DPP)”.
Checkpoints were carried out under the Coastal Watch initiative, launched in Killybegs last month, which is a joint effort with Revenue’s Customs Service and others to prevent and detect the importation of illegal drugs.

These types of checkpoints also raise awareness among coastal communities and people operating at sea so they can assist state agencies by reporting suspicious activity. Information leaflets were distributed to motorists at these checkpoints.
This was a multi-agency initiative between Detective Units, the Divisional Drugs Unit and the Divisional Immigration Unit within An Garda Síochána with the assistance of Revenue Customs officers and the Workplace Relations Commission.
In July 2023, around 60kgs drugs with an estimated street value of up to €4million were found washed up on two beaches in north Donegal. The first package was found on a remote beach in Fanad with another floating ashore in Dunfanaghy.
It was the largest consignment ever located in Co Donegal and investigations are ongoing, but it is believed that the find was linked to a larger shipment thought to have successfully landed at a Donegal pier.
Investigators, who have liaised with a variety of international agencies, believe that a shipment came from South America and it has been suggested that over €30 million worth of cocaine was whisked away in a waiting vehicle after a smaller boat docked in west Donegal which traffickers bought days before the shipment.
