Police are investigating an assault which took place following a football match in Newtownabbey on Saturday.

The game took place at Mallusk Playing Fields, following a BDFL Cup game between Kelvin Old Boys U21s and Westland Young Men FC.

Footage which is circulating on social media shows several players attacking an opposing player outside the changing rooms.

A statement from the PSNI said: “Police in Newtownabbey are appealing for information in relation to an assault which took place around 3pm yesterday (29/11/2025). This followed a football match at Mallusk Playing Fields.

“Anyone who witnessed this assault, which took place at the changing rooms, should contact Police on 101 quoting reference 1381 29/11/25.”

Both clubs took to social media following the incident to issue statements.

Kelvin Old Boys FC said that whilst the team put in a fantastic performance, the game soon turned ugly.

The club added: “The club will be taking this further to ensure that our lads are never in a position like this again.”

Westland YM FC also posted to Facebook, claiming any footage circulating is not an “accurate representation” of events.

The club added: “The committee of Westland YM FC are aware of the videos circulating social media regarding todays match. This is not an accurate representation of today’s events.

“The club will make an official statement in due course.”
