An inspiring young Donegal man’s recovery from a serious brain injury has been beautifully captured in a new film to be released this week.

As The Crow Flies follows the journey of James Maguire, from Letterkenny, who was involved in a serious accident in Dublin in 2019 which resulted in a bleed and swelling on the left side of his brain. After urgent surgery, including a Cranioplasty to relieve cranial pressure, he spent a week in intensive care at Beaumont Hospital followed by months of rehabilitation in the Adams McConnell Ward.

To say he made a remarkable recovery would be an understatement. Since then, the son of Kenny and Kate Maguire from Illistrin, has raced 460km in a six man team over Mont Blanc in France to raise awareness for men’s mental health. To date, the group, ‘Team & Again’, has raised €8,790 for the Movember charity. More recently, James completed the Dublin City Marathon in October, adding a major endurance achievement to an already unforgettable year. Crossing the finish line in the capital held special significance given his recovery journey began there six years ago following his accident.

“I remember weeks after the surgery, one of the surgeons shaking my hand and saying it was one of the fastest recoveries they had ever seen. I’ll never forget how amazing the staff were in Beaumont Hospital,” James said.

“Without them I would not have had such a positive outcome, and I am now six years on, living a normal life. I will always be grateful to the staff and medical teams at Beaumont Hospital.”

Last year, James’s family, including uncle and celebrity chef Nevin Maguire, took part in a fundraising event, The Kitchen of Hope, to show their appreciation for the hospital’s care.

Their remarkable journey has been captured in a feature documentary, As The Crow Flies, which will be released on the Team & Again YouTube channel on Sunday, December 7.

The film follows the physical, emotional and logistical challenges of the 460 km race and highlights the personal stories behind the team’s commitment to raising awareness for men’s mental health.
