Donald Trump seemed to nod off once more in front of cameras as worries about his health persist.
The US president appeared to drift off publicly for the second occasion this week, this time whilst welcoming leaders from Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. He was putting pen to paper on agreements with the Congo and Rwanda which the White House anticipates will open up fresh avenues for the US to obtain vital minerals.
This follows Trump appearing to doze during his own cabinet session on Monday. As Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed the conflict in Ukraine, Trump’s head drooped forward with his eyes shut, and at moments he looked perilously close to sliding off his seat.
In this most recent episode, he once more appeared to be battling to keep his eyes open throughout the proceedings. Political commentator Harry Sisson, who identifies as a Democrat, posted footage of the Republican president on X, stating: “Trump just fell asleep again. This keeps happening. He’s obviously not okay and anyone who believes he’s healthy is lying to themselves. We’re screwed.”
Trump received Presidents Felix Tshisekedi of Congo and Paul Kagame of Rwanda, alongside several officials from other African nations who journeyed to Washington to observe the signing, during the same week he scornfully dismissed the conflict-ravaged country of Somalia and declared he did not want immigrants from the East African nation entering the US. The signing of a peace agreement in Washington handed Trump yet another chance to trumpet his achievements on television, but his evident exhaustion has ensured that concerns about his wellbeing persist, reports the Mirror.
During a Cabinet meeting on Monday, whilst Rubio was discussing the difficulties of brokering peace between Russia and Ukraine, viewers found their attention drawn elsewhere. One observer posted on social media: “Trump falls asleep as Rubio talks about the war in Ukraine!”.
Another remarked: “OMG, Trump actually publicly fell asleep during his cabinet meeting at 2pm. MAGA won’t be able to explain this low stamina away. He was up all night posting and didn’t sleep!”.
“Trump dozes while Marco Rubio speaks to him, directly next to him. Just insane optics,” a third person commented.
Trump continues to face growing anxieties regarding his health, despite the White House maintaining that he remains in “exceptional health.”
Last month, footage emerged of Trump gripping the handrails tightly whilst disembarking from Marine One, prompting an expert to raise questions about dementia. He was making his way down the helicopter steps in Washington DC before heading to the waiting Air Force One, which transported him to Palm Beach.
The commander-in-chief was also observed limping up the stairs to Air Force One in June. The manner in which he has been seen favouring his left leg has prompted speculation about whether this could indicate dementia.
Observers noted Trump’s deliberate effort to firmly plant his left leg. The individual who captioned the video commented: “That left leg is doing all the heavy lifting. He’s really making sure that it’s firmly placed.”
Following the incident, a psychologist identified a “telltale” sign in Trump’s right leg that could indicate a specific form of dementia.
“If you observe the way he walks, he has what they term a leg swing, where he kind of swings his right leg in a semicircle as if it’s a dead weight, and he’s just sort of swinging it around,” Dr. John Gartner elaborated. He further added: “It’s very apparent in some footage and not so much in others, but that right leg swing is considered to be highly indicative of a specific type of dementia, Frontotemporal dementia.”
