They have had their own troubles recently but this has become a Christmas tradition for Inka and JakobInka runs front-of-house at Coffee Scape while her partner Jakob handles things behind the scenes

They had a bad start to the Christmas season when a vandal caused damage to their windows during a suspected break-in attempt.

But even while they were in the midst of cleaning up (and paying for) the broken windows that also hit their trading hours, a Croatian couple running a very popular cafe on Cork’s quays were making plans to do their bit for some of those struggling in their community this Christmas.

Hard-working Croatian couple Inka and Jakob – who featured in CorkBeo when they opened their business – run the very busy Coffee Scape cafe on Pope’s Quay. They serve everything from hot coffee and traditional Croatian/Balkan food (Cork has a very big and vibrant Croat community) to veggie and vegan dishes.

Despite the recent attack on their business, the couple are staying very positive this Christmas, and have again offered a bit of help to anybody in the community who might be struggling with bills.

On their social media accounts, they are inviting ‘people in need’ to contact them and they will arrange to have a small package of good quality, home-prepared food, available for collection in their cafe on Pope’s Quay.

Inka and Jakob want to assure those who might need a bit of help that it will be ‘entirely confidential’ as they understand that Christmas can be a difficult time of year for many.

The couple have 4,000 followers on Instagram and the cafe is always lively, welcoming and full of both native Leesiders, Croats and people from many different parts of the world. If you are down around Pope’s Quay this weekend, drop by, say hello to the guys and try some of their traditional Balkan sweet treats and dishes.
