Mercy University Hospital (MUH) will assume clinical and operational governance of the former Blarney Golf Links Hotel from January 1, 2026.

It will be transformed into a key level 2 rehabilitation centre for the Southwest region with 30 beds, with 20 remaining beds being allocated for neuro-surgical patients.

The news has been warmly welcomed by Fine Gael TD for Cork North Central Colm Burke. “The decision represents a significant step forward in strengthening rehabilitation and neurological supports across Cork and Munster, while ensuring the people can access care here. Previously most rehabilitation patients were required to travel to Dún Laoghaire for treatment.”

Under the plan 30 beds will be allocated to MUH to manage inpatient rehabilitation for moderately complex MUH patients.

The unit will offer individualised rehabilitation services delivered by a multidisciplinary team to assist patients in regaining strength and independence after illness, injury, or surgery.

20 beds will be allocated to Cork University Hospital for neuro-surgical patients with newly acquired complex disability after neurological injury.

The objective of the National Clinical Programme for Rehabilitation Medicine is to maximise early timely and lifelong intermittent access to specialist rehabilitation.

It is also planned to transfer the Prosthetic Orthotic Limb Absence Rehabilitation (POLAR) Unit from MUH to Blarney by Q1 2026 in line with the philosophy of providing services in the right place.

This relocation is designed to enhance patient access through better parking facilities and more spacious, modern clinical environments.

Deputy Burke said the expansion will ease pressure on the Mercy, improve patient flow and provide capacity for patients who need structured rehabilitation.”

The Cork TD continued: “This is a hugely positive investment in Cork’s health services and a strong vote of confidence in MUH. I will continue to work closely with the HSE and the Department of Health to ensure that this project is delivered at the earliest possible opportunity.”

Local Fine Gael councillor Damian Boylan said the announcement is hugely welcome news for Blarney and the wider North-West of the City. “The investment in specialist rehabilitation and neurological services will enhance patient and secure a positive future for the former Blarney Golf Links Hotel as a vital community health service.

“Local residents have always wanted to see this used to its full potential and this announcement goes some way towards this ambition. I look forward to working with Deputy Burke to ensure its delivery,” he added.
