Callum McGregor will be a huge part of Wilfried Nancy’s plans going forward, and has even been compared to a former Celtic target.

Like all managers, Nancy will call upon McGregor to be his voice on the pitch and guide his players to success.

The 32-year-old has been the heartbeat of everything good the Hoops have done over the years, and that won’t be changing.

His new boss can see a lot of similarities to one of his former captains, who actually came close to joining the Bhoys in 2017.

Wilfried Nancy says Callum McGregor is like Darlington Nagbe

Darlington Nagbe was an influential member of Columbus Crew’s squad while Nancy was in charge.

Nagbe was also on Celtic’s radar and was on the verge of signing for the Hoops in 2017 before a £3m move broke down.

Nancy is looking forward to working with McGregor, and the 48-year-old wants his new skipper to be the same.

He told the Daily Record: “In terms of ownership, this is so important. I have to empower my players. And the fact that Callum is already like that, is the same story as Darlington Nagbe. The captain that I had in Columbus, 32 years old.

“I knew Callum before. When he played for Ange, when he played for Brendan. And I watched many games. So I know him already. I didn’t know the person. And as a person, he’s outstanding. He’s a really good player. He’s really, really good.

” I also have a massive respect with players who have a part of belonging. And Callum, to stay in the club for many years like this, this is unbelievable. Because he can inspire people. When he’s going to stop, I don’t know when, he created a legacy. And he created memories.

“We have Callum, but also we have other players who are able to do that. And this is really, really important.”
