Dozens of patrons at a charming pub were looking forward to a festive meal, but instead fell victim to food poisoning.

The alarming incident occurred at the Corner House Inn, a beloved guest house pub in the small village of Llangynwyd, South Wales.

Public Health Wales confirmed that 43 people suffered from food poisoning just hours after enjoying a Sunday lunch at the establishment.

The health body reported that several customers experienced sickness and diarrhoea following their meal at the pub. Investigations revealed that the illness was caused by a food poisoning organism known as clostridium perfringens.

Despite being described as a “cosy” and “welcoming” pub, with some even wishing it was their local, the restaurant is now cooperating with authorities.

A spokesperson for Public Health Wales stated on Tuesday: “We have received 43 reports of illness in people who ate food prepared at the premises. We can confirm that clostridium perfringens has been identified as the cause of this illness. The risk to the public is low, and we do not expect to see further cases associated with this incident.”

In a Facebook post, the popular pub assured its followers that it “will be honest throughout and will continue to do so”, as the investigation into the 43 illnesses continues, reports the Mirror.

The pub added: “We are still working with them to ensure the safety of our customers and staff.”

Despite the debacle, the Corner House Inn plans to keep its doors open and continue operating its restaurant.

This pub doubles as both a pub and guest house, serving up fare that goes well beyond your typical pub menu. Starters feature unusual offerings such as prawn salad, creamy garlic mushrooms and Chinese duck and hoisin bon bons, with prices ranging between £3.50 and £6.50.

Main courses showcase a variety of steaks and other meat dishes including gammon steak and a rack of pork ribs. Traditional pub classics also feature, such as steak and ale pie or beer battered cod.

Many diners have sung the venue’s praises, as evidenced by its 4.5-star rating on Google from more than 450 reviews. One satisfied customer commented: “The food was excellent, portions are massive and the atmosphere of the pub is just what you’d hope for.”

They also highlighted how busy this local favourite gets, noting: “Just a heads-up: it’s popular, so it’s best to call ahead for lunch or dinner reservations to make sure you get a table.”

Another reviewer praised: “Service was excellent along with the great food.”

However, not all feedback has been positive, with some recent TripAdvisor reviews criticising the staff and service standards.

One disappointed diner remarked: “Very rude staff couldn’t cope with the party of 15. Rushed us to book our food it was a very unpleasant experience from start to finish. Average food nothing special.”

Another customer commented: “I used to love this place but the service and table manner of some of the staff is dreadful. There used to be a lovely atmosphere here but instead you get disgruntled employees rushing you along and certain bar staff that treat everything like its a major inconvenience to them.”

The Food Standards Agency states that “clostridium perfringens is a bacteria widespread in animals and the environment”. The infection typically occurs after consuming contaminated meat or poultry that hasn’t been stored properly.

Nevertheless, loyal customers have rallied behind the establishment on Facebook, with many pledging to continue dining there despite the food poisoning incident. One supporter declared: “Won’t stop us eating with you.”
