Pawport Soho Door with Small Dog

Pawport Smart Pet Door is available in three sizes and retrofits over existing pet doors but offers a full suite of data tracking and metrics to ensure your pet stays safe and intruders are kept out.

PAWPORT

If you are the servant of a cat or dog, you’ll know all too well that keeping tabs on their comings and goings can be a complete nightmare. Now, Pawport, a Phoenix-based pet-tech startup, has announced the Smart Pet Door, which can transform existing pet doors by converting traditional cat flaps and dog doors into a secure entry system that’s controlled using the Pawport app and can even be integrated into a smart home.

This isn’t the type of technology I typically write about, but recent events in the Sparrow household caused this press release to catch my eye. I currently share my home with a young gray rescue cat called Leo. He likes to come and go as he pleases and spends a lot of time outdoors.

Unfortunately, this is a neighborhood where there is a high density of felines, including a large ginger tom called Simba, who has taken to regularly breaking in through Leo’s cat flap and proceeding to eat all his expensive organic chicken and artisan-baked cat biscuits. Simba often visits twice a day, especially at night and is so stealthy.

I need a way of ensuring Leo can come and go as he pleases while keeping greedy old Simba where he belongs: outdoors and hungry. So, what is a cat slave to do? The answer could be the Pawport Smart Pet Door. Cat flaps and doggy doors with collar or chip-activated locks are not particularly new, but Pawport is designed to fit over an existing opening and it includes some genuine innovations in the pet security space.

Stops Pests, Intruders And Cold Draughts

Pawport has generated significant interest, including multiple “Best of CES” winners. It’s built from thick, powder-coated steel and aircraft-grade aluminum. The system uses two solid-steel deadbolts secured into a high-strength steel frame. The Smart Pet Door closes firmly to create a secure barrier against pests, intruders and thermal leaks. This sounds promising as a large and hungry cat can even headbutt open a locked cat flap to get some extra grub.

The Smart Pet Door is designed to be retrofitted over almost any existing pet door or opening without the need for a professional installation. For homes without an existing pet door, Pawport also sells complete systems that install securely into any wall, door or glass panel.

Once installed, the Smart Pet Door pairs with a lightweight and waterproof Smart Pet Tag that’s worn on the pet’s collar. The tag automatically triggers the door to open when the pet is nearby and moving, ensuring only the correct animal gets in or out. The door also supports smart functions like curfew scheduling and activity tracking, so you can find out if your pet is sneaking out to party at night.

With a Pawport door, you can keep out pests and intruders who might otherwise break in and eat all your pet’s food. Cat’s identity protected.

Everything is controlled using the Pawport app, which offers remote control as well as curfew and scheduling features. There’s also voice control with Alexa, Siri or Google, plus pet-specific tracking and usage data.

The Pawport system is available in three sizes, so even the more portly of pets are catered for, with almost any height or weight accommodated, although probably not an Irish wolfhound, to be fair. Unlike traditional pet doors, the Pawport comes in 14 finishes across three collections. The Designer Series uses scratch-resistant materials in a range of classic neutrals and tasteful colors. For an elevated look, there is the Signature Series with a textured facade that looks like natural wood.

Whether you have cats or dogs, controlling access can be important, especially if you live in a community where cats are under curfew, such as Melbourne, Australia.

The Pawport system includes pet curfew and weather-detection settings. Using the Pawport app, you can customize your pet’s schedules to make sure they are stay inside at night or during inclement weather. The door can be set to automatically lock when it’s rain or lightning is detected.

Tracking Your Pet

Pet tracking insights can monitor your pet’s activity with notifications that track when they go inside and outside. All data insights can be accessed via the app, such as the total number of times they go outside, the duration of each outside visit, general pet activity and resting time, as well as other information and metrics.

There are several ways the Pawport can be powered. It can be run with an optional rechargeable battery pack so the door can remain operational even if there is a power outage. The power lead can be oncealed inside the door or plugged into an AC power source using the USB-C port on the bottom of the door. The power cord can also be hidden inside the wall using the optional Pawport concealed power kit. For extended battery life, there is an optional Pawport solar panel.

The door is designed to open and close without pinching or harming the pet. The system has sensitivity gauges that prevent the door from closing on a pet as they enter or exit their domain. Pawport also includes child-safety protection that can disable the on-device controls so kids can’t be persuaded by a pet to operate the door manually and let them out. You know how sneaky cats can be.

Most sizes of pets are accommodated with Pawport as there are three sizes which come in a range of colors and finishes.

PetportFull Range Of Accessories

The Pawport app can be used to control the color and brightness of the built-in LED lighting located on the inside of the Smart Pet Door. You can schedule when the light comes on or goes off, plus it offers a choice of millions of colors and several brightness levels.

Pawport has also announced some new accessories to go with the Smart Pet Door. The premium Pawport is an adjustable collar designed to place the Smart Pet Tag in the ideal position for the door to operate while minimizing its thickness for increased pet comfort; nobody likes a tight collar. It comes in a range of colors that coordinate with the Smart Pet Door and Smart Pet Tag.

Pawport is also introducing the PawMat, a durable mat made from heavy-duty rubber and polypropylene turf designed to withstand extreme climates. The mat helps to keep muddy paws cleaner while enhancing the appearance of the door’s entrance. There’s also an adjustable ramp that enables access to the exterior side of the pet door, which could be handy for anyone with short legs or older pets unable to manage steps.
