Fans of Grammy-nominated musician Roderick “Rory” Macleod have been sending prayers to his family and former band after the disturbing details of his death have emerged.

According to reports, Macleod, who is best known for his time with the group Roomful of Blues, was hit and killed on Dec. 6 in Rhode Island while walking his dog.

He was 70.

People Magazine reported that Shannon Godbout, 41, was arrested by the Hopkinton Police Department following the incident. In a release shared to Facebook, police said Hopkinton “left her lane and struck several objects, including two telephone poles.”

Police said that Macleod was walking his dogs in the eastbound lane when he was hit. He was transported to Rhode Island Hospital where he died.

Police said that Godbout was in possession of “numerous illegal narcotics and packaging materials associated with drug distribution.”

The Rhode Island State Police Accident Reconstruction Team is investigating the incident.

Godbout is facing charges for driving as to endanger, resulting in death, and possession of narcotics, Schedule I/II with intent to distribute, third plus offense.

Police said that Godbout’s criminal history includes “100 arrests, with 8 of them from the Hopkinton Police Department.” The department said that 82 warrants have previously been issued for Godbout, and that she has had 40 traffic citations.

Roomful of Blues posted about Macleod’s death on Facebook.

“We would like to acknowledge his diverse musical contributions as well as being a wonderful and gentle soul,” the statement read. “There are no words for such an immense loss. RIP dear friend.”

Fans were quick to respond with love.

“A tragic loss, and something that shouldn’t have happened,” Debbie Sptiznagel commented on the post. “My condolences to sandol, his family and many friends.”

“My heart breaks for the Macleod family, who must be devastated,” Sharon Kenler Kinnane replied. “He was a gentle soul and talented musician who will be missed by many. Sending hugs and prayers to all who mourn him.”

“Very sad news,” Mary Pilkington O’Connell wrote. “Deepest condolences to all that knew and loved Rory. Such a loss … so talented.”
