There were upsetting scenes on Coronation Street on Monday, as the show tackled a new format for a powerful episode.
In a specially formatted set of scenes, all filmed from the point of view of different cameras, the ITV soap shone a light on domestic abuse. We saw what was going on behind closed doors for Todd Grimshaw and his controlling and abusive partner Theo Silverton.
Fans have seen Theo targeting Todd for months with manipulation tactics, gaslighting and recently he turned violent. As he continued to isolate Todd from his loved ones, the latest bold episode saw what Todd was being subjected to in his own home, with no one knowing.
It reached a point that “heartbroken” fans begged residents to “wake up” and see what Todd was going through. In a cruel twist, we saw the tables turned as Theo looked like the victim, and Todd came across as the villain.

Events reached boiling point as Todd had enough of the abuse and stood his ground. But when Theo ended up getting injured, it was Todd who was questioned by police.
Theo had gone for Todd once more, leading to the latter shoving him, with Theo crashing into a table. As Todd panicked, Bernie Winter heard the commotion and called the police who came to investigate.
Theo was taken to hospital and treated for his injuries, while Todd was taken to the police station. As Kit Green quizzed Todd about what had happened, he didn’t mention the abuse at all. When Kit asked if this had happened before, Todd began to hyperventilate.
Again still not exposing Theo he begged to leave, and kept trying to play everything down. With Todd in a cell, Theo took no blame as he too was quizzed about the incident.

Theo did eventually claim Todd wasn’t guilty, and it was clear the police officer thought he was covering up abuse at the hands of Todd. Theo didn’t do anything to downplay this, allowing them to think Todd was guilty.
Viewers watching the episode were devastated to see Theo believed over Todd, the real victim. One fan said: “Just watched today’s episode for the first time in a while and it’s drained the life out of me which means very well done to all involved in portraying such an important story, poor Todd.”
