Social Democrats TD for Wicklow, Jennifer Whitmore, has called on Uisce Éireann to urgently clarify the cause of persistent foul odours affecting communities across the county from Bray to Newcastle, and said residents deserve to know if there is “a serious environmental issue”.

Deputy Whitmore has written to Uisce Éireann and contacted them directly by phone, seeking clear information on the nature of the issue and when residents can expect a resolution.

“For four days now, people across Wicklow have been dealing with an unbearable smell and it’s simply not good enough that Uisce Éireann have yet to provide a proper explanation,” Deputy Whitmore said.

“Their statement confirms there is an issue with the Greystones Waste Water Treatment Plant, but it offers no detail on what the problem actually is, how far the impact extends, or when it will be fixed. That’s not acceptable.

“The public deserve transparency. A vague acknowledgement of the issue is not enough, especially when it’s affecting such a wide area. I’ve asked Uisce Éireann to provide clarity on the cause, the expected timeline for resolution, and what steps are being taken to prevent this from happening again.”

“I will continue to press for answers and accountability. Residents deserve better than to be left in the dark while dealing with the consequences of a serious environmental issue.”

The issue was also highlighted by Cllr Orla Finn, on Sunday, when she posted an alert for residents on Facebook.

“Uisce Eireann have confirmed that there is an issue with the Waste Water Treatment plant in Greystones as well as with a number of other treatment plants around the country. They are actively working on resolving these problems now,” she said. ️️️

“️A number of people have contacted me about the terrible smell of sewage around the town. I have spoken to Uisce Eireann, who have logged the issue with their after hours crew, and have confirmed that they will send someone out immediately to check that there are no problems at the local waste water treatment plant,” she said.

Uisce Eireann has been contacted for comment.
